Behaviour indicators of ASD vary in severity. Behaviours and intensity are considered while diagnosing the disorder. Autism’s most prevalent symptoms are a delay or inability to talk, an obsession with rituals and routines, a lack of motor skills, a problem making eye contact, a lack of interest in social connections, and reasoning and planning issues.

Approximately 18 million people are living with autism in India and the number is increasing every year as per the statistics. ASD affects approximately 1% to 1.5 percent of children between the ages of 2 and 9 years old. An estimated ten percent of children who are old enough to attend school have been found to have mild to severe learning difficulties. The alarming increase in the number of people diagnosed with autism in this country can be attributed to many factors, including a lack of awareness about the condition, inadequate access to basic services, and inaccurate diagnosis.

Takhte is ever emphasising inclusive education. And aims to use this occasion to spread the day’s message, and also showcase a young Asperger artist, Neelesh’s latest artwork, to the people who would appreciate it the most: our readers of VOV. As a means of promoting appreciation and encouragement for persons with autism and raising awareness about the condition.

Neelesh’s ‘Temple Temptation’ depicts numerous devotees who have come in hope of being able to catch a glimpse of Lord Shiva. They are anticipating that all their problems get solved and they receive a boatload of good fortune. He is a devout individual who places a high value on worshipping Lord Ganesha and also finds solace in visiting the sacred Puttaparthi Sai Baba Temple. But when he sees disadvantaged people queuing up outside the temple for alms, it makes him unhappy. Neelesh hopes that he may be of use to them by distributing food.

By Goldie KasturiaFounder, Takhte World Autism Awareness Day, celebrated every year on April 2 is one of four health-specific UN Days, established on December 18, 2007, by UN General Assembly resolution 62/139, and all member states are encouraged to raise autism awareness at all levels.
