The Black plague, SARS outbreak, and now this? After the alarming epidemic, it’s clear that there should be changes introduced in prioritizing science and research.

In Albert Györgi’s words, “Research is to see what everybody else has seen and to think what nobody else has thought.“ The need for scientific research is pivotal for humanity’s survival amidst the mayhem of climate change and the extinction of species. One might ask, “How is the bleaching of coral reefs and a small rise in the water level going to affect me?”

Evolutionists approve that the human race’s growth is favored by biodiversity surviving so far, the exact biodiversity that is presently on the brink of existence. We take pride in being the first species investigating our evolution, but it would be a shame to predict our demise. In order to avoid that, we should pay heed to what the researchers say.

But, in a fast-paced world like ours, one can agree that research is an expensive affair. As Yuval Harari, in his book, ‘Sapiens’ put it: “Scientific research can only flourish in an alliance with religion or ideology,” it is evident that scientists are struggling with revenue. Short-term grants allow them to focus only on projects that can be achieved in a smaller time frame, yet the most significant discoveries in humankind required years or even decades. We shouldn’t emphasize the brash results; instead, we should take notes on the arduous process. Falling into the deep hole of this “science-capitalist-empire cycle“, young scientists are fabricating results and tampering shreds of evidence in order to afford a living.

History tells us the tale of how only the research that helped us attain some political, economic, or religious goal made it to the books, but now is the time that we steer our path. Instead of quenching our materialistic demands, we should concentrate on sustaining the human race as well as conserving natural resources and the dying biodiversity.

Critics believe that any research- good or bad should be supported. In Mark Abrahams’s words, “If you are doing research and you know exactly what you’re going to find, you’re not doing research, you’re doing marketing.“

Past discoveries give us an account of how unrelated findings make their way to aid our wants. Sir Alexander Fleming’s work brought notice to the world that all accidents aren’t bad. After coming back from a vacation, he found out that bacteria were growing in a Petri dish all over, except in a place where a peculiar mold was growing. The aftermath was him hiring a new maid and finding the most influential antibiotic in modern science.

The origin of Viagra was startling to Pfizer, for it was originally developed to treat heart illnesses. Although the drug proved to be useless, it paid off by providing long-lasting and stronger erections.

An explanation as to why research continues to be a drab employment choice is that this career demands tremendous time and effort. Parents and students prefer to choose professions like engineering and business to get easy cash and the desire to live a glitzy lifestyle.

Many researchers also confide that scientific research is a costly livelihood, and several people decide not to invest fortunes in such a job. By encouraging young students to take up research as a career option, we are ensuring civilization’s betterment.

In desperate times like these, scientific research demonstrates the only way to overcome diseases and world crises. An old adage beautifully sums up the severe need for prioritizing science and research in the future:

To help 1000 people- treat them,

To help 10,000 people – teach students,

To help 100,000 people – teach teachers, To help change the future – do research.

Sai Snigdha KodaliAzim Premji University, Chennai, Tamil Nadu Amidst the quest for the COVID-19 vaccine, I wonder if epidemiologists already predicted another pandemic?
