What kinds of responses are needed to address prevailing inequalities and violence? What kind of role can youth play in this space?

In late 2019, a unique communicable disease with human-to-human transmission was recognized first in Wuhan, China which now has become a pandemic. Seemingly the battle is against the novel Coronavirus, but every individual of the country is fighting their own battle – the battle for existence. The virus has drawn our attention towards the social and gender inequalities leading to domestic violence, loss of education access, and reduction of job opportunities for urban migrant workers.

A pandemic within a pandemic, i.e., schools closed, labourers furloughed, the stay-at-home orders left victims trapped with their abusers. Domestic violence helplines that were created to help the victims witnessed a 50% drop in the calls, as they were unable to connect. One out of four women faces physical, emotional, sexual, or psychological tortures at their home. Youth has a significant role to play against this violence. As we say, ‘charity begins at home similarly the revolution should start from home itself’. We first need to look after that none of our mothers and sisters gets abused by the patriarchal society. We should raise our voices at home and simultaneously use social media platforms to expose the abusers. Campaigns targeting men and boys should be intensified, and the judicial system should enforce more stringent laws to penalize the abusers.

Just like other sectors, the education sector is similarly widely affected by the pandemic. Around 320 million learners stopped going to schools and colleges, making it almost impossible to restore them. New creative ideas should be enforced to attract students to join online classes. Installation of smart television, distribution of mobiles and tabs should be implemented in every village. Attractive assessment parameters, certifications should be improved. More youngsters should be employed in programs like teaching from home, which will help in the rapid growth of learning platforms.

The lockdowns, being one of the most critical aspects of this pandemic, displaced lakhs of migrants. Many were rendered jobless, as urban areas were shut due to lockdown. A survey conducted among 4000 workers across 12 states of India showed 8 out of 10 workers lost jobs in urban India during the lockdowns. Saving and recreating employment for such workers should be one of the urgent priorities of the Government. As we all know, that young blood is filled with innovative start-up ideas; this is something that might turn very helpful in the reemployment of migrant labourers. Young minds must be given opportunities to commence new enterprises by funding them. They can support the business by providing subsidies directly to workers through digital payments. Lessening the tax compliance burden, especially for small businesses, can also be one of the measures to be adopted.

‘Young people when informed and empowered, when they realize that what they do truly makes a difference, can indeed change the world’- Jane Goodall

The youth of India constitute more than one-fourth of its total population. We, as responsible youth of this country, should participate in the battle against this zoonotic disease. First, we can raise awareness about the pandemic. If we see any gathering around us, it’s our responsibility to supervise and report if required. We can also volunteer in organizing vaccinations and RTPCR test drives. And, we can do this by staying alert and at home.

Srimoyee ChakrabortyHemwati Nandan BahugunaGarhwal UniversityUttarakhand Weekly WinnerPan India Online Essay Contest 2021- 3rd EditionCategory – Youth Essay Topic:The coronavirus has highlighted social and gender inequalities, such as the rise in domestic abuse, loss of education access, and the reduction of job opportunities for urban migrant workers.
