Book Review – For the Price of a Cake
Anveshika Tripathí
Grandparents are the seamless balance of love, laughter and joyful memories. Truly, the greatest blessings one could have as best educators, pillars of strength, and torchbearers. If it is said Grandpas will always have time for their grandchildren when everyone else is busy then Grandmas never run out of hugs and are safe haven. Anveshika Tripathí’s absorbing and stirring novel ‘For the Price of a Cake’ is about a twelve-year-old girl, Adya whose corner of solace is only her grandma. She had lost her parents and her elder brother is immoderately engaged in achieving the survival needs.
Adya is forlorn and feels neglected. Familial loss and deprivation of social interaction have made her corner from pleasantness. Her grandma whom she gets to meet once a month was a stress reliever, storyteller and instiller of moral values. Grandma’s wish to have a cake on her birthday becomes a driving force for Adya to fulfil, amidst the sturm and drang and burst of emotions. An unwelcome event brings the siblings together leading to introspection.
The novel is warm-hearted and charming with a gripping plot exploring the filial relationships and the value of togetherness. The characters are condensed, equally delicate and life-like. The chapters are interesting, well-developed and not overcrowded with sub-plots. One must pore over the novel in knowing the young author’s palpable thinking.
